I was listening to my music the other day, and a random song popped up. It was the song "Everything's Alright Now" from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. I remember watching the movie in the theater when I was a kid in 1973. Local churches protested, claiming the film was blasphemous, but I didn't see it that way. As an Atheist today, I still appreciate the storytelling from the musical, and the songs were terrific.

"Everything's Alright" is one of my three favorite songs from the movie, the others being "Herod's Song" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him." However, "Everything's Alright Now" captures the mood of 1973. The song is simple and haunting in a way. I love the arrangement and the message that resonates: Everything's alright now, so rest and sleep, and let the world turn without you worrying. Although the calmness of the don't is interrupted by Judas, I still find it a pleasing and relaxing song without any personal religious connotations now.

I am including this musical version because I love the voices and the emotion.

Like I said, I now watch and listen to the music and the lyrics with appreciation for the music and the lyrics without taking this as some religious anthem. I don't hate religion as a concept, but the practice of faith that we see today bears no resemblance to the movie.

The only relevant thing that I notice in this song is when Jesus tells Judas that there will always be poor people, and he rebukes Judas for trying to actively help them, instead relying on the old promise that things will be better if you follow me. The problems of society cannot be ignored, especially using the shield of religion, because that gives people the built-in excuse for not addressing the current situation. Therefore, the poor are ignored for the most part, except for some charity now and then when the real solution is to work to eliminate poverty in the first place actively.

We live in the wealthiest country in the world, yet we still have too many people living in poverty. There is no will from our leadership to attack the problem because the religious thing prevents them from taking any real action, and that is a true crime against humanity.

So, enjoy the song, rest tonight, and then we should attack the system that doesn't try to help every single member of society.
